Beautiful Series Revamp Q&A

(If you follow me on facebook, you’ll already know this. But if you’re here looking for answers, you’ve come to the right place.)

Where did all the old books go?  I’ve taken them down. :cue the gasps: That’s right. The entire eleven book series has been pulled from retailers to undergo a massive makeover.

What kind of makeover? New covers. New content. I’m stripping them back to their bare bones, adding scenes, taking them away; in some cases the ending has even changed. The current eleven books will and novellas will be combined into eight titles. They still have the same heart, and the characters are the same; you’ll just get more insight and more time with them.

Why are you doing this?  I was struggling to get my head back into the series to write the final book and novellas. So, I went back and read through the series to help with that. I realised that not only is the series outdated, but it isn’t representative of my writing ability anymore (of course, I wrote the first book almost a decade ago). I needed to up my game on a series that tends to be a reader’s introduction to my work and I wanted to celebrate these characters who are the reason I have a career. The Beautiful Series was my very first foray into the world of romantic fiction, and I want their stories to be the best they can be before I write the final book and close the lid on this long-running series for good.

It’s ending? WTF? Yeah. I know it sucks. It’s hard to say goodbye. But it’s time. It’s been going since 2012. The characters will always exist in the Lilli-verse (Katrina makes an appearance in Never Again, Paige makes an appearance in the Drawn Series, and Lisa pops up with Perry in the Entwined series) so they’ll show up again. It’s not goodbye forever.

How long is this going to take? As it stands, the series will be complete by  the end of  this year. I’m waiting to hear back from my editor to make dates official, but I do have firm dates on the first four books.

Here’s where we’re at:

Love is a Beach or Darcy Comes First for a Change? WTH is going on?

Very recently, I released a new novel–my BIGGEST novel to date–called ‘Love is a Beach’. My editor called it my best work. Early reviewers loved it. New release readers hugged it and wanted to be Nana when they grew up. But the rest of the world? Crickets. It didn’t matter what advertising or promotional angle I tried, I couldn’t get the book moving.

So, what’s an author to do when her newest baby won’t fly out of the nest? Give up and move on? No way. That’s never been my MO.

While I’m aware that some books just never find their audience, I wasn’t willing to put Love is a Beach in that category until I’d exhausted all options. *The following is a bit of business talk that may or may not bore you senseless. If you find your eyes glazing over, feel free to scroll to the bottom of the post where all is explained in summary* I was running ads. It’s something I’m good at, so I knew they were doing their job. They were finding readers and sending them to my Amazon sales page, but those readers weren’t one-clicking. Since I knew the problem wasn’t the actual book, it had to be the description or the cover.

First off, I tried a few different tag lines at the top of the blurb–something to grab the reader’s attention to get them to read on. I noticed a tiny bit of a shift there, but nothing significant. I tightened the actual blurb with the same result which let me to toy with the cover.

I tried out a different image that was more in line with popular rom-com books at the moment and things improved but only slightly. After switching the cover back, I wondered if perhaps changing the title would make the difference. Maybe readers thought the title ‘Love is a Beach’ was too sweet? Maybe they took it too literally instead of translating it to ‘Love is a Bitch’? I had no clue by that point, but my confidence was really shaken and I needed to do something bigger since the smaller changes weren’t helping.

Deciding to buck the man-chest trend, I went with an overjoyed looking woman and the title ‘Darcy Comes First for a Change’. I thought it was still tongue in cheek and fit the story well because Darcy is a mother who rarely puts herself first, plus her new man Leo ALWAYS makes her come first :insert winky face here:

To my absolute relief, the cover and title change worked. Within a few hours of it going live, my sales and borrows started moving upwards and this awesome story (if I do say so myself) is getting the audience it deserves. So we’re sticking with it. The puzzle has been solved and I’m able to put my creative focus into what comes next instead of agonising over why I can’t sell a book I poured my heart into and worked ridiculously hard on. Hallelujah!

For those of you who read my work the moment it released, I want to thank you for always trusting me to delivery the steam and the entertainment no matter what the subject. I’m always honoured to have you travelling this road with me. I hope you like the new title and cover, but if you prefer the original the paperback version still has it. I’ll leave it available so you can grab that for your shelves over the next couple of months.

And to those still waiting to read, here’s the link to get your copy. You won’t regret it.

Are you ready for a new Beautiful Series novel?

I hope so! A Beautiful Star will be releasing on November 17, and I can’t tell you how much fun it is for me to be back in the Beautiful Series world again. I’ve really loved writing about Sandra and Jonathan, they have this great chemistry that can’t be denied no matter how much Sandra tries to fight it!

I’m about to show you the final cover and the blurb, but before I do, here are some fun facts about the Beautiful Series that you’ll learn in A Beautiful Star.

  • Sandra is Lisa’s best friend in A Beautiful Rock. She’s also the reporter Marcus sleeps with at the very end of Melody! :O
  • In A Beautiful Rock, Sandra mentions that she met a guy called Brad in the lift at work, she pretended to be a ghost and he pulled her hair, well, he’s in A Beautiful Star too!
  • Brad, is friends with Elliot from Struggle and Forever.
  • ALL of your favourite couples will make an appearance in the book, so you’ll get to check in with them and see how they’re going.

Ok! That’s all I can tell you without giving too much away! So, here’s the cover, below is the synopsis and below that is an excerpt from the book and THEN, if you’re still with us, there are preorder links for iBooks, Kobo, and Nook (Amazon will go live for release day).

***CONTENT WARNING*** New Adult Romance for ages 18+ due to sex scenes and adult situations.

When Jonathan decided to help Lisa, he was trying to atone in some way for his past sins. He certainly wasn’t expecting to be pulled into a night full of hiding out from the press with a journalist called Sandra Haegen, and almost being choked to death by a rockstar in love with his ex.

When Sandra decided to help Lisa by feeding Perry, she was just trying to be a good person. She also wasn’t expecting to spend the night hiding from the press. Even more so, she wasn’t expecting to spend the night with one of Australia’s hottest young actors, Jonathan Masters. She also wasn’t expecting to save his life.

And that’s just the beginning.

From there, these two must find a way live with the past and look to the future – no matter what the personal cost.

The next morning, I head into work to find yet another gift waiting for me on my desk. It’s a small white box with a blue ribbon tied around it, and the sight of it makes me stop in my doorway and immediately pull out my phone.

“This needs to stop,” I say to myself with an annoyed shake of my head as I pull up Jonathan’s number and dial. He picks up within two rings.

“Good morning, Red,” he chirps.

“Stop sending me things,” I demand immediately.

“You’ve got the wrong guy this time. Whatever you have, it wasn’t me. Maybe it was from that pretty boy you were kissing in the papers the other day.”

“He’s not a pretty boy. You’re a pretty boy.”

“That’s very sweet of you to say,” he jokes.

“Well, I’m a sweetheart, what can I say. Listen, sorry to attack you, I should have checked the card first.”

“You can call me anytime, for anything. I won’t hold it against you.”

“Ok,” I laugh. “I’m hanging up now.”

“Alright, you do that. But, Red, when am I going to see you again?”

“I haven’t decided on that yet.”

“You’re hurting me. I just want to be your friend and you’re putting up road blocks.”

“I’m totally not buying this friend act.”

“You should, because it can’t be more unless you want it to be. Besides, we have fun. We get along. You want fun, right?”

“You’re trying too hard, Jonathan. I’m going now.”

I can hear the smile in his voice. “Bye, Red.”

Hitting the end call button, I walk over to my desk and pull the blue ribbon on the box to get to the card.

For your tastebuds.

Call me.

Smiling, I open the box and find a red velvet cupcake inside. When I bite into it–and yes, I eat it immediately–it’s the softest, most flavour-filled baked treat I have ever had the pleasure of eating–and I’ve eaten a lot, so I know what I’m talking about.

“You are very popular lately,” Erin, our receptionist comments on her way past my office. “You’re getting more deliveries than anyone else here. And the guy who dropped that off was H-O-T. Oh my lord, you are one lucky woman.”

“He was here?” I ask, pointing at the box as I talk through a mouthful of cake.

“I think so. Dark hair, brown eyes, tatts all over his arms? He was wearing a white bonds shirt, a pair of jeans, and some Vans. He didn’t seem like a courier to me.”

“That’s him alright. How long ago?”

“Maybe an hour? I told him you don’t get in until nine.”

I swallow the last of the cake and lick the crumbs off my fingers and my lips, apologising that there was only one in the box as I do. Then I thank Erin for dropping by and when she leaves, turn to my phone again, this time ringing the correct person for a thank you.
